EasyJet Boss Slams EU Free Baggage Proposal as Disregarding Passenger Intelligence

Published on

The head of EasyJet has suggested that European Union baggage regulations implicitly disregard passenger intelligence and ability to make informed decisions.
Legislative proposals to mandate free cabin baggage have secured parliamentary approval. The regulations would require airlines to provide allowances for both personal items and larger carry-on luggage across European aviation.
Kenton Jarvis argues that passengers are intelligent consumers capable of understanding pricing structures and making choices aligned with individual preferences. Regulatory mandates suggest policymakers believe passengers can’t make good decisions independently.
This paternalistic approach disrespects consumer capabilities and substitutes government judgment for individual decision-making. Passengers generally prefer having choices rather than having decisions made for them by distant regulators.
EasyJet generates more than £2.5 billion annually from ancillary services that respect passenger judgment. The carrier reported quarterly losses of £93 million while trusting consumer intelligence and seeing strong booking indicators.
