Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has firmly responded to criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Mexico’s handling of drug trafficking and organized crime. At a morning press conference, Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico is aware of its challenges and is actively addressing them.

Sheinbaum underscored the importance of accountability and rejected external judgments, while also highlighting the role the United States plays in the cross-border drug crisis. She questioned the measures being taken by the U.S. to combat drug trafficking, prevent money laundering, and halt the illegal flow of weapons into Mexico. Furthermore, Sheinbaum called for stronger U.S. efforts to tackle opioid consumption domestically.

The Mexican president acknowledged the severity of drug production and trafficking issues but argued that responsibility lies on both sides of the border. She pointed out that firearms illegally flowing from the U.S. enhance the firepower of criminal organizations within Mexico.

Trump’s administration has urged Mexico to intensify actions against officials allegedly linked to drug cartels, while citing Mexico’s arrests and prosecutions as positive steps. In response, Sheinbaum defended her government’s actions, stating that Mexican authorities pursue prosecutions based on available evidence, irrespective of political ties. She highlighted the achievements of Operation Swarm, a targeted effort against criminal and corruption networks.

Concluding her remarks, Sheinbaum called for increased transparency regarding U.S. initiatives to curb fentanyl trafficking and domestic drug use. She stressed the necessity for both nations to jointly address their responsibilities in resolving the drug crisis affecting the region.
