U.S. President Donald Trump is set to press Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for a ceasefire targeting energy infrastructure during their anticipated meeting in New York this week. The discussions are scheduled to occur on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, amid escalating tensions marked by Ukraine’s intensified strikes on Russia’s energy sector.

Over the weekend, Ukrainian forces launched a significant assault on the Moscow region, reportedly striking a major oil refinery and resulting in three casualties. Trump has criticized these attacks, asserting that they are exacerbating global energy shortages and urging an end to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine due to its impact on international energy supplies.

Zelenskyy has indicated that negotiations are underway, with proposals being examined to ease tensions. He has emphasized that Ukraine’s energy facilities, critical infrastructure, and food exports should no longer be targeted by Russia. In response, Kyiv would be willing to implement corresponding measures to de-escalate the situation.

Previously, Trump urged Zelenskyy to refrain from targeting Russian diesel and fuel infrastructure, claiming such actions were contributing to shortages. The issue was also a focal point during a phone conversation between the two leaders on Sunday.

Although Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an energy ceasefire, no formal agreement has been reached, with Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities persisting. Trump is expected to address these issues further in his upcoming speech at the UN General Assembly, where he will focus on the global energy crisis and efforts to resolve ongoing conflicts.
