The US Treasury Department has unveiled plans for a new commemorative $1 coin that features former President Donald Trump, as part of the celebrations for the United States’ 250th anniversary. The coin, which is set to be released this fall, aims to honor the nation’s enduring legacy of liberty and patriotism, according to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. It is intended to celebrate America’s core values and its commitment to freedom.
This special edition coin showcases a portrait of Trump on its front, accompanied by the word “LIBERTY,” the dates “1776–2026,” and the phrase “IN GOD WE TRUST.” On the reverse side, it features the iconic bald eagle from the Great Seal of the United States, alongside the national motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” The final design of the coin was approved earlier this year, although it underwent some modifications before production, including a change to a gold-colored finish rather than being made from solid gold.
The announcement of the coin has sparked controversy, as longstanding federal law typically prohibits living presidents from being depicted on US currency. Despite this, Treasury officials assert that the secretary has the authority to authorize commemorative coin issues in certain circumstances, allowing for this particular coin to be produced.
The decision to feature Trump on the coin has been met with mixed reactions, reflecting the divisive nature of the former president’s legacy. Nonetheless, the US Mint is moving forward with production, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s history as it approaches its semiquincentennial celebration.
