Trump Forms Task Force to Evaluate AI Risks in 120 Days

Published on

President Donald Trump has initiated a “Super Intelligence Force” to address the challenges and risks posed by advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. This new task force, led by National Intelligence Director Jay Clayton, aims to align federal AI policy with national security and technological leadership goals. The group is tasked with evaluating AI-related risks across multiple sectors, including financial services, energy, transportation, and emergency services.

The initiative includes collaboration from various federal agencies, such as the Pentagon, the Justice Department, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Federal Trade Commission. The task force will also focus on areas like cybersecurity, biosecurity, and civil liberties, ensuring that safeguards for advanced AI systems are thoroughly assessed. Within 120 days, the team is expected to present recommendations to President Trump concerning AI risks, security standards, and the implications of excessive regulation.

The “Super Intelligence Force” will also consider if AI laboratories should be mandated to report security breaches, hacking incidents, and attempts to bypass system safeguards. Supporting Clayton as vice chairs are FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson, Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Emil Michael, and Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor. Notable members include Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, with external participation from former AI adviser David Sacks and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Despite the administration’s efforts, the creation of this task force has faced criticism from Democratic lawmakers. They have expressed concerns about the effectiveness of the task force in delivering enforceable protections without legislative backing. However, the administration maintains that AI oversight should balance security and public safety without stifling technological innovation. The outcome of this initiative could significantly impact how the US navigates the rapidly evolving landscape of AI technology.
