Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed concern over U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to temporarily halt new sanctions against Russia. Zelenskyy warned that easing economic pressure could embolden Russian President Vladimir Putin to escalate the conflict in Ukraine.
The Ukrainian leader stressed that suspending the proposed sanctions might undermine international efforts to resolve the ongoing war. He called on the United States to maintain its economic pressure on Moscow and urged European nations to boost their diplomatic involvement.
The proposed sanctions targeted Russia’s energy sector, financial institutions, and oil transportation networks. They also included tariffs of up to 100% on nations importing Russian oil, such as China and India. The 60-day pause aims to provide the U.S. administration with time to evaluate the potential economic impacts of these measures.
Meanwhile, Russia continues its attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, causing concerns about electricity shortages and the safeguarding of essential services as winter approaches. Zelenskyy has appealed for additional international support to bolster Ukraine’s air defense systems and protect civilians.
Additionally, Zelenskyy has voiced worries about restrictions affecting the Starlink satellite internet services used by Ukrainian forces, cautioning that disruptions could hinder certain military operations.
The disagreement over the sanctions highlights ongoing differences between Washington and Kyiv regarding the strategies for ending the conflict, military assistance, and economic pressure on Russia. Zelenskyy remains steadfast in his belief that sustained economic and military pressure is vital for achieving lasting peace.
