UN Report: Global Emissions Must Drop 18% by 2030 to Curb Warming

Published on

The world must urgently reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 18% by 2030 to help limit global warming to manageable levels, according to the latest report from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The report emphasizes that achieving a 45% reduction by 2045 is crucial to keeping global temperature increases to 1.7°C above pre-industrial levels, a target that is already at risk of being missed.

Current trajectories suggest the world is not on course to meet the 1.5°C target set by the Paris Climate Agreement, although UNEP notes that immediate and decisive government action could still mitigate the extent and duration of temperature overshoots. Despite a slight stabilization in global emissions in 2025 compared to the previous year, this does not signal a long-term downward trend, the report warns.

Renewable energy sectors are growing rapidly, but reliance on fossil fuels persists, and unclear climate policies present significant obstacles. Even with countries’ existing climate commitments, the report suggests that global temperatures could rise by approximately 2.6°C. Under current policies, this figure could reach 2.8°C, leading to severe impacts such as intensified heatwaves, wildfires, and agricultural disruptions.

Experts stress the need for fossil fuel-producing nations to expedite their transition to renewable energy and to bolster their emissions-reduction strategies. While solar and wind energy technologies are advancing quickly, there is a notable gap between scientific recommendations and political actions.

Addressing methane emissions is also highlighted as a priority, given methane’s potent short-term warming effect compared to carbon dioxide. Closing the gap between climate pledges and actual policy implementation is critical, according to the report.

The upcoming global climate assessments by the UN are expected to play a vital role in reviewing national progress and stimulating stronger commitments. Scientists caution that delaying action could lead to irreversible changes in the climate system, underscoring the urgency for immediate action.
