US Inflation Climbs to 3.7%, Pressuring Trump and GOP Before Midterms

Published on

US inflation increased to 3.7% in September from 3.4% in August, intensifying economic pressure on President Donald Trump and the Republican Party ahead of the November midterm elections. The rising inflation rate, driven largely by higher energy prices, has become a significant concern for American households struggling with increased living costs.

Government data reveals a 0.6% month-on-month rise in consumer prices for September. Gasoline prices saw a dramatic 34% increase compared to the previous year, while fuel oil prices surged by 74%. These spikes are contributing to higher household expenses as winter approaches. Additionally, air travel costs have risen by 22.4% year-on-year, further straining consumer budgets.

Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, reached an annual rate of 2.6%. The persistent rise in costs is raising concerns about its impact on household budgets, especially as fuel and transportation expenses weigh on the broader economy. The ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran has further fueled global energy prices, exacerbating the situation for both consumers and businesses.

The economic landscape is expected to play a pivotal role in the upcoming midterm elections, with many voters expressing dissatisfaction over affordability and the rising cost of living. The Republican Party, currently in control of the White House and Congress, is under mounting pressure to show progress in managing inflation. President Trump has attributed the rise in oil prices to Iran and regional instability, while defending his administration’s economic policies. However, continuous price increases could complicate efforts to reassure voters about the economy’s health.

Additionally, the Federal Reserve faces challenges in adjusting monetary policy amid elevated inflation. The high prices may restrict options for interest-rate cuts, and increased borrowing costs could impact mortgages, businesses, and consumers. The latest inflation figures underscore the economic hurdles facing the United States as voters prepare to decide control of Congress in the forthcoming elections.
