JD Vance Allegedly Ridicules Carney During US-Canada Trade Negotiations

Published on

In a leaked audio recording from a private fundraiser, US Vice President JD Vance can be heard making light of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s handling of trade negotiations with President Donald Trump. Vance reportedly referred to Carney as a “very sweet guy” but ridiculed his efforts to “out-tough” Trump, suggesting that Canada ultimately conceded on several negotiation points.

This incident surfaces as the United States and Canada are engaged in discussions to potentially finalize a trade agreement. Central to these talks is Trump’s threat to impose a significant 50% tariff on Canadian imports. As part of the negotiations, there is speculation that Canada might agree to once again allow US alcohol products on its store shelves, a concession that could help avert the looming tariffs.

The initial plan was for these tariffs to take effect on August 19. However, President Trump announced a brief delay, pushing the implementation by three days. The White House justified the proposed tariffs, citing what it termed as “discriminatory restrictions” on American alcohol sales in the Canadian market.

Reports indicate a notable decline in Canadian imports of US alcohol, a factor that has prompted discussions among provincial leaders about potentially reintroducing these products to Canadian consumers. Despite these negotiations, there remains a faction of Canadian politicians who are urging citizens to continue their support for local products, notwithstanding the potential trade agreement with the US.
