The U.S. Department of Energy has given final funding approval for an energy storage project at the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy (GTRLC) in Traverse City, Michigan. This project, spearheaded by Advanced Battery Concepts (ABC), will see the installation of a 1.15 MW battery energy storage system designed to enhance energy resilience and optimize the use of renewable energy sources.
The initiative, backed by Congressionally Directed Spending, involves integrating the storage system with GTRLC’s existing 185 kW solar photovoltaic setup. Its primary function will be to store solar-generated electricity and release it when necessary, ensuring a more efficient and reliable energy supply for the conservancy’s headquarters.
ABC, based in Michigan, will utilize its proprietary GreenSeal® bipolar lead battery technology for the project. This technology is noted for using significantly less lead than traditional lead batteries while maintaining safety and recyclability standards. The batteries, which will be housed in three commercial-scale BOX-BE™ energy storage enclosures, are developed and manufactured within the state, highlighting Michigan’s contribution to the domestic energy storage supply chain.
With the funding secured, the project transitions into the procurement and manufacturing phase, with installation and commissioning anticipated in the second quarter of 2027. This development marks a significant milestone for ABC as it continues to innovate in the field of energy storage solutions.
