Obama Criticizes Institutions for Yielding to Trump, Urges Standing by Convictions

Published on

Former US President Barack Obama has criticized universities, law firms, and businesses that made deals or concessions under the Trump administration, urging institutions to uphold their core values. Speaking on a new podcast episode with Marc Maron, Obama emphasized: “We all have this capacity, I think, to take a stand.”
Obama pointed out that organizations should prioritize principles over short-term gains. He noted that universities should maintain academic independence even if it risks losing federal funding. Similarly, he said companies should resist pressures to roll back diversity initiatives or alter hiring policies to conform to political demands.
Highlighting the importance of integrity, Obama acknowledged that defending core convictions often comes at a cost. “Sometimes it’s going to be uncomfortable,” he said, stressing that standing up for values requires both courage and humility.
He also criticized what he described as a “holier-than-thou” attitude in progressive rhetoric, arguing that it can mirror the same rigidity seen in conservative moralism, which he considers harmful.
