Trump Administration to Provide Only Half of SNAP Funds Amid Ongoing Government Shutdown

Published on

The Trump administration announced it will release only half of the usual monthly funds for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) as the government shutdown continues into its 34th day. Nearly 42 million Americans rely on SNAP benefits, which are now being partially maintained through contingency funds.
According to the Department of Agriculture, recipients will receive 50% of their typical benefits due to limited funding availability. The decision follows a federal court order directing the administration to ensure the program continues despite the shutdown. Judge John McConnell ruled that the administration could not legally deny funding to SNAP and ordered the release of emergency funds by Monday.
President Donald Trump said he would comply with the court’s decision, stating that the government would provide “emergency funding” as soon as legally permitted. However, state agencies have warned that distributing the reduced funds could take several days or even weeks.
The funding shortfall has caused growing concern nationwide, with long lines forming at food banks and emergency distribution sites in multiple states. Some states, including New York, Oregon, and Virginia, have declared states of emergency to provide limited assistance, though these measures fall far short of regular federal support.
