Carmel-by-the-Sea is set to celebrate a significant milestone with the 100th anniversary of Sunset School, now known as Sunset Center, on October 25, 2026. This event kicks off a five-year “Century of Creativity” campaign, culminating in 2031 with the commemoration of the historic theater auditorium’s centennial. The free community celebration promises an array of cultural activities, including live performances, historical exhibits, and art displays, all taking place from 1 to 4 p.m. at the iconic Carmel location.
The event will host a multitude of performances by local cultural organizations, such as the Carmel Bach Festival, Monterey Symphony, and the Carmel Music Society, among others. These performances will occur in the historic 718-seat theater and on the outdoor terrace between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. Attendees can also enjoy a variety of family-friendly activities, including campus tours and rock painting, as well as participate in the Sunset Legacy Wall, a community art project inviting personal contributions of artwork and memories.
Beyond the performances, the celebration will feature an archival exhibition tracing Sunset Center’s evolution from its origins as a school to its current status as a regional cultural hub. Various local organizations, such as the Carmel Heritage Society and the Carmel Youth Center, will be involved in the day’s events, showcasing the center’s integral role in the community. Visitors will have the chance to explore live art demonstrations, music, photography programs, and even wellness activities throughout the historic property.
For those attending, complimentary refreshments will be provided, and additional food and beverages will be available for purchase from Sunset Center concessions. This celebration not only honors the past but also sets the stage for a continued appreciation of cultural and historical programming in the Monterey Peninsula area.
The event is open to the public and free of charge, with festivities located at Sunset Center, San Carlos Street at Ninth Avenue, Carmel-by-the-Sea, California.
