IPL Returns Amid Global Tensions, Player Juggling as Schedule Clashes with ODIs

Published on

After an abrupt suspension due to the Kashmir conflict, the Indian Premier League (IPL) resumes with renewed intensity and a reshaped schedule. The tournament, paused mid-match on 8 May when rockets landed near Dharamsala, returns Saturday with a revised plan that limits venues to six cities and culminates in the final on 3 June.
The restart sees several English players—Jacob Bethell, Phil Salt, and Liam Livingstone—back with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, while others like Sam Curran and Mitchell Starc have opted to stay home. The overlap with England’s ODI series against West Indies starting 29 May and preparations for the World Test Championship final has created a logistical crunch for international players.
Despite complications, teams have been allowed to sign temporary replacements, with Jonny Bairstow expected to step in for Will Jacks at Mumbai Indians. Notably, Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis exited the Pakistan Super League citing safety concerns, only to join IPL’s Gujarat Titans as Jos Buttler’s replacement.
As cricket navigates political unrest and overlapping commitments, the IPL continues to adapt—balancing global talent, security concerns, and an unyielding schedule.
