Major AI Firms Agree to Voluntary Safety Framework at White House Meeting

Published on

Major artificial intelligence companies have agreed to a voluntary framework aimed at enhancing safety oversight in AI development, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday. This initiative, known as the “White House Accord on Super Intelligence,” was revealed following a meeting with top technology executives at the White House, amid increasing concerns about the potential risks posed by advanced AI systems.

The accord encourages participating companies to establish strong internal controls to monitor and detect issues within their AI systems. It also requires these companies to appoint dedicated teams to oversee these safety measures. An integral part of the agreement is the involvement of independent external auditors or evaluators, who will assess the effectiveness of the companies’ safety controls. Additionally, the companies will create independent board committees responsible for reviewing both internal and external assessment reports.

Though the agreement is voluntary and lacks legal enforceability, it suggests that the measures could eventually be codified into laws or regulations. The meeting at the White House included senior executives from influential tech companies such as Anthropic, OpenAI, Nvidia, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Tesla.

President Trump emphasized the importance of the technology industry taking responsibility for the safe development of AI while maintaining their pursuit of innovation. He has consistently argued against excessive regulations that might hinder the sector’s growth. This accord comes at a time when there is heightened public and governmental scrutiny regarding AI safety, cybersecurity threats, and the environmental impact of large data centers.
