In a recent statement, US President Donald Trump urged Libya to cease functioning as a transit point for illegal migration across the Mediterranean Sea, emphasizing the importance of stronger border controls and enhanced cooperation between the United States and Libya. Trump’s remarks, shared on Truth Social, highlighted the necessity for immediate action to address the ongoing migration issue.
Trump praised the Libyan people for their resilience and lauded the longstanding partnership between the United States and Libya in combating terrorism, including their collaboration in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS). He described the Libyan people as “proud, resilient, hospitable, and deserving of peace and prosperity,” underscoring the need for continued cooperation in tackling security challenges.
In addition to migration concerns, Trump reiterated Washington’s support for Libya’s political transition, which involves efforts to unify state institutions, enhance governance, and conduct long-overdue national elections. The North African nation has faced prolonged political divisions since the 2011 ousting of former leader Muammar Gaddafi, with rival factions vying for control.
Trump also called on Libyan political groups to set aside their differences and resist foreign interference in the country’s internal matters. He stressed that the Libyan people deserve sovereignty, stability, and a peaceful, prosperous future.
The statement reflects Washington’s focus on migration management, counterterrorism cooperation, and political stability in Libya, aiming to address the multifaceted challenges facing the nation.
